Detailed Program Description

The three program phases include all building block activities (not to be confused with the services) denoted by their number 1, 2 or 3 at the bottom row in the above figure. After the first two phases, the plans are (re)evaluated until they sufficiently integrate the possibilities of technology, the requirements for business success, and the needs of people. This results in desirable product (goods and services) innovations and engaging change measures that drive performance and growth. The first phase consists of one or two agile (lean) sprints that take 8 weeks with 320 hours of our support (i.e., 100% support) to maintain focus, sense of urgency and momentum at critical phases in the process. It delivers the draft versions of inspiring, purposeful, and actionable competitive strategies, engaging and realistic innovation and change project portfolios to deliver top performance and sustainable growth. The second phase takes 24 weeks with 480 hours of our support (i.e., 50% support) and defines, plans, and executes the definitive version of the program by traditional (fat) project and program management techniques. This prevents scope creep and aims to deliver inspiring, purposeful, and actionable strategic, operational, and functional plans with ambitious but realistic performance improvement and sustainable growth targets. The client will integrate in, manage through, and monitor the program by his usual strategic management systems, like the Stage-Gate® Process for product innovation or the balanced scorecard for performance management. The third phase takes 4 weeks with 160 hours of our support (i.e., 100% support) to finalize projects, monitor performance and growth, and evaluate the capabilities to be further strengthened for competitive advantage.

Duration and Support

The program lasts approximately 36 weeks and requires 960 hours of our support (i.e., 67% support). Selected leaders will need to spend 1440 hours to build advanced capabilities for competitive advantage.

Costs, Benefits and Risks

The 1.2.3. Shape! service aims to deliver top performance and sustainable growth while building advanced capabilities to obtain competitive advantage by combining the best of agile and traditional project and program management techniques. The strategic plans are made inspiring, purposeful, and actionable by following the design thinking principles in our journey through a top-down and bottom-up approach starting with a phase with one or two agile intense sprints followed by a program phase that uses traditional project and program management techniques to prevent scope creep, and manage time, resources and risks according to the client's requirements. We designed the 1.2.3. Shape! program activities to synergize the bundled building block activities, yielding a highly effective program. The top-down and bottom-up approach aims to deliver desirable product (goods and services) innovations and engaging change measures that drive performance and growth while repairing the high failure rate (between 70% and 90%) of traditionally managed innovation and change programs. The costs of the 1.2.3. Shape! service are 960 hours of our support which is equal to the support given in the 1.2.3. All-in service. However, the 1.2.3. Shape! service also requires considerable management time of the selected leaders in the program, who gain in return advanced leadership capabilities to drive performance and sustainable growth. The risks of the 1.2.3. Shape! programs are low as the results are solid and at least as good as the deliverables of the client's usual strategic management systems.
